Review: Kristin Ess’ Signature Gloss Temporary Hair Color

In late December, I got a balayage and for the first six weeks, my color looked great! But in the last month, the dyed parts of my hair were starting to look a little orange. Yet, I did not have the time or money to get it professionally re-toned. Then a couple weeks ago, I came across the Kristin Ess hair collection at Target. After doing my research, I bought in and picked up the Signature Gloss Temporary Hair color in Smoky Topaz.

Kristin Ess’ Signature Glosses are salon quality products that claim to be brass neutralizing, shine-boosting, and deep conditioning. This is not a permanent dye, but a temporary solution that is meant to be used in between salon visits. In fact, this is supposed to extend your color’s life by an additional 3-4 weeks. Best of all, this product is formulated without silicones and is ammonia-free.

Before

As you can see, my hair did have some brassiness, and I was looking to make the color a little darker to enrich my natural dark brunette hair. Looking back on it, I should have chosen the Chocolate Cosmo color because that was formulated to work better on brown hair, while Smoky Topaz is for dark blonde and light brown hair colors.

The process was simple and the directions laid out everything that I need to do. I thoroughly wet down my hair, scrunched out excess water, detangled it, and sectioned it off. I then combined the two bottles together, put on the provided gloves, and started applying the gloss. After distributing the gloss evenly, I let it sit for 15 minutes. I then washed the dye out and shampooed, conditioned, and styled my hair as normal. I would also like to note, that unlike normal dyes, this one did not stain my skin or create a horrible mess.

After

As you can see here, the gloss did neutralize the brassiness in my hair, while enriching my brunette color. What you can not see in this picture is that the gloss did not harm my balayage. My roots remain darker than my ends, which are a few shades lighter. You will also notice that my hair is shinier.

All in all, I LOVE this product! It did everything that it promised to do. It delivered in color, shine, and conditioning. It makes a great product and is perfect if you can’t get to the salon for regular visits.

Kristin Ess not only makes hair color, but also an entire line of hair products including, shampoos, conditioners, scalp care, and styling.
