How To Create An Aromatherapy Shower

Aromatherapy, otherwise known as essential oil therapy, is a treatment that utilizes natural extracts to promote physical, mental, and spiritual health. Aromatherapy has been used for hundreds of years in countries all around the world. It has become increasingly popular to diffuse oils and has been added to many people’s self-care regimen. I too have added diffusing to my life, but I have also extended aromatherapy to somewhere a little unexpected…my shower.

Aromatherapy benefits include:

  • improved sleep quality
  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • soothe sore joints
  • treat headaches and migraines
  • boost immunity

These are hard benefits to pass up and I find that I get the most out of aromatherapy’s benefits when I incorporate essential oil rich products.

Clarify

Once a week, I like to give my scalp a deep clean with a pre-wash from Head & Shoulders. This eucalyptus and mint detoxifying mask lifts away dead skin, dirt, and product build-up, revealing a refreshed scalp. If you have an itchy or dandruff-prone scalp, this is a great product for you. Since I use dry shampoo weekly, this is my go-to to wipe out that nasty build-up. I just open the packet, take about a quarter size amount in my palm, and start massaging the product into my scalp and all along my hairline.

Find this in the shampoo aisle along with the other Head & Shoulders products.

Wash

After massaging the pre-wash mask into my scalp, it is time to shampoo my hair with Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo. This shampoo has a heavenly scent that is only intensified when used with the pre-wash. Why? I don’t know! Maybe it has something to do with the deep clean. All I know, is that the scent of lavender and mint fill the shower and relaxes me before bedtime.

Condition

Following up shampooing is conditioning, and I use the same brand and formulation for this. This way, I get a double shot of lavender and mint. Not only does this conditioner hydrate, but it also detangles and softens my color treated locks.

Scrub

Lastly, I wash my body with Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap in the scent peppermint. Wow, does this pack a punch! The peppermint mixed in with the lavender is invigorating and tingles the senses. If you have not checked out this product yet, do yourself a favor and do so! You can use this soap on your face, body, hair, pets, and dishes.

With all of these scents mixing together, I love to close my eyes and breathe deeply a few minutes, reaping the benefits of aromatherapy, before stepping out of the shower. When I am finished I am more relaxed and ready to continue unwinding and to start my bedtime routine.
