The Creme De La Crême in Zeeland

New to the Zeeland community, in between the old storefronts on Main St. of the downtown district, is La Crême. While West Michigan is no stranger to the local, aesthetically pleasing coffee shop, a French Creperie feels like a novelty.

Even from the outside, the modest facade, promises something special, and that is exactly what La Crême is. No special occasion is required for admittance, but I did visit with my little sister, Kristen, for her Gotcha Day.

Sidebar: Gotcha Day is a celebration for adopted children. It is the day that the paperwork is finalized and they take their new last name. We treat it as a second birthday for Kristen.

When we walked into the cafe at 8:20am, we were pleasantly greeted by the staff, and since it was our first time there, they walked us through ordering. Kristen and I quickly ordered sweet crepes and drinks – Le Louvre and a Taro Bubble Tea for her and the Fraise crepe and Lavender Lemonade for me.

After collecting our order number, we selected a two top table in the back, but not before looking around the crisp white store. Now, before this was a quaint creperie, this store was a froyo place called The Fuzzy Peach. I cannot stress to you enough how much this place has changed! Gone is the bright orange and turquoise paint and here to stay is the stark white walls and cozy shabby-chic furnishings with light Parisian-esq jazz playing softly. I have never been to France, but if I had to imagine a countryside cafe, it would be this. Simple. Elegant. Timeless.

In addition to seven sweet crepes, their menu includes eight savory crepes, soups, yogurt bowls, gelato, and various frozen, iced, and hot drinks. Everything sounded really good, but ultimately, Kristen and I gave into our sweet tooths.

Within a minute our drinks were delivered, and within five, our crepes arrived. First of all, these crepes were huge and Kristen and I left feeling pleasantly full. Secondly, they were very flavorful. Kristen’s crepe was filled with blueberries, lemon curd, and cream cheese, while mine was filled with strawberries and cream cheese.

We also enjoyed our drinks. Kristen, being a boba tea connoisseur, did believe her drink was a little watery, but still had good flavor. I had no complaints about my lavender tea! The lavender wasn’t too overpowering and offered a great dimension to the lemonade.

All in all, we loved La Crême! Every single thing was excellent, and we can’t wait to return and sample their savory crepes along with our sister, Marissa.

So, if you’re in the West Michigan area, get in your car, cruise down Chicago Dr., get off at Zeeland, and check out this local family-owned creperie. Indulge in the sweet or savory, take a few pictures while you’re at it. Because why not? And sink into the moment. This place is meant to be appreciated, and that’s what I want you to do – appreciate the excellence.
